The Americana Series
The outbreak of the Texas Revolution in October 1835 created a sensation across the American South, and many men stepped forward to support the struggle against Mexican tyranny. Roughly 120 young bucks enlisted in two volunteer companies organized at a public meeting in New Orleans on the evening of October 13, 1835. These aspiring freedom fighters dressed themselves in plain gray jackets and trousers, along with sealskin caps or old U.S. Army forage caps. Their weapons included muskets, rifles, pistols, swords, and Bowie knives. They called themselves the "New Orleans Greys."
